The Muslim conquerors, for the sake of spreading the word of God and jihad, had reached as far as the Great Wall of China in the East and the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in the West. Perhaps the vast sea had hindered them, but there was a new land before them: Al-Andalus. Gibraltar, standing guard with the demeanor of a giant sentinel, seemed to beckon them through the mists.
